For reasons unknown, the Council received a letter from the Eagle and Star Insurance Company asking for a special rainfall reading to be taken on certain dates in June 1930. This application was granted and passed to the Surveyor.[1]
In July 1948 the Parks Committee decided to set up a "climatological station" in Alexandra Park, purchasing the appropriate instruments from the Air Ministry at a cost of £85.[2] It was located in a fenced off area south of the tank bed and west of the Cenotaph.
The Parks Committee agreed in September 1956 that a self-recording rain gauge could be installed, and in September 1959 the Surveyor was authorised to purchase a grass minimum thermometer and wet and dry bulb thermometers.[3]
The Weather Station can be seen in the 1977 aerial photograph.
